Promoting Multilingualism in Public Life – the Language APL project
Interreg VI-A NEXT Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine ProgrammeThe Language APL – Cross-border Language Accessibility in Public Life project (HUSKROUA/23/S/3.1/011) promotes multilingualism as a key component of inclusive public life in the Hungarian–Ukrainian–Romanian border region. Implemented through cooperation among the partner organisations, the project supports social inclusion, equal access to public services and cross-border economic cooperation by reducing language barriers.
The initiative responds to long-standing minority language challenges in the region, as well as to recent demographic changes, particularly the increased presence of Ukrainian citizens in neighbouring EU countries. In this context, multilingual communication is not only a cultural value, but also a practical necessity for effective public services and community cohesion.
A major milestone of the project was reached on 26 November 2025 with the closing conference held in Berehove. As a concrete outcome, trilingual nameplates were officially handed over to the Berehove Administrative Service Centre and to 21 schools in the local community. In addition, five best-practice multilingual locations were identified in each partner country, and several institutions and businesses received support to introduce multilingual communication solutions.
