"Light at the Border" – a traveling exhibition in the Slovenian-Hungarian border region

Slovenia-Hungary Interreg Program

On February 27, 2026, the first ceremonial opening of the traveling exhibition, organized as part of the “Messages” project co-financed by the Slovenia-Hungary Interreg Program, took place in Szentgotthárd. The exhibition, titled “Light at the Border – In the Footsteps of Martyrs János Brenner and Dániel Halász,” was created in the spirit of cross-border cooperation and shared historical memory. The exhibition presents the martyrs Blessed János Brenner and Servant of God Dániel Halász through five thematic sections, featuring numerous interactive activities.

One of the project’s main outcomes is the “Light at the Border” pilgrimage route, a nearly 100-kilometer-long cross-border trail that helps connect the region’s two so-called capitals—Szentgotthárd and Lendava—and preserve the memory of the two martyrs.

A key goal of the project is to use the pilgrimage route and the traveling exhibition to make the exemplary lives of these two prominent figures visible to younger generations, while simultaneously strengthening the cultural and tourism network between the Pomurje and Rába regions.

The exhibition was on view until March 10 in Szentgotthárd, in the gallery of the parish church, after which it moved to Szombathely, to the Martineum Adult Education Academy building, where it was on view from March 17 to 29. On April 1, 2026, it will reopen in Zalaegerszeg, in the Mindszentyneum building, which will be the third venue of the traveling exhibition, consisting of a total of seven venues.
