From Mill to Mill: Preserving the technical heritage of Slovenia and Hungary

Interreg Programme Slovenia-Hungary

The From Mill to Mill project, co-financed by the Interreg Programme Slovenia-Hungary, focuses on preserving and revitalizing the technical and cultural heritage of historic mills in Slovenia and Hungary, highlighting their long-standing use of sustainable energy. Project partners developed new programming and marketing content to breathe life into abandoned mills and strengthen their role in rural Europe.

Renovation works were carried out on two key sites: the technically unique Filo mill, upgraded mainly in its drive system, and Slovenia’s renowned Babič mill, where the roof was fully restored to ensure safe operation. The project strongly connects local communities, institutions and visitors through inclusive events, educational activities and heritage celebrations held at several mills. Special attention was given to young people through hands-on learning experiences, including milling flour and baking bread. To ensure long-term impact, partners founded the Association of the Scattered Mill Museum of Slovenia and Hungary. Thirteen mills have already joined the initiative and are presented in a trilingual monograph. Future plans include additional events, guide training and new tourism content, giving mills a renewed role in modern society.
