Interreg VI-A Hungary-Slovakia Programme

Back to previous page

The Interreg VI-A Hungary-Slovakia Programme shares the general aim of all Interreg programmes throughout Europe, which is to tackle familiar challenges together and find shared solutions in any field where cross-border cooperation has added value. This cooperation between the two countries has been ongoing for more than 25 years. One of the most emblematic results of the joint work is the reconstruction of the Mária Valéria bridge between Esztergom (HU) and Štúrovo (SK), handed over to the public in 2001.

The Interreg VI-A Hungary-Slovakia Programme has the largest budget out of those cooperation programmes where Hungary is involved. The Programme contributes 166 million EUR for creating cross-border cooperation and to implement joint projects in 2021-2027.

Although the Applicants are eligible if they are registered in any NUTS3 region of Hungary or Slovakia, all project activities must be conducted in or at least have an impact on the programme area. The programme area consists of the following regions:

•    Slovak Republic: Bratislavský kraj, Trnavský kraj, Nitriansky kraj, Banskobystrický kraj, Košický kraj;
•    Hungary: Győr-Moson-Sopron County, Komárom-Esztergom County, Budapest, Pest County, Nógrád County, Heves County,                Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County.

The programme is open to organizations such as state and public administration organizations, civil and non-profit organizations, educational institutes and research centres and small- and medium-sized enterprises, etc.

Project partnerships shall develop and implement joint projects. In general, at least one Slovak and one Hungarian partner must participate in such partnership. As a general rule, the projects receiving support are usually selected through open call for proposals and the European Union funds 80% of a project’s total cost. The remaining 20% can be provided from national resources and/or own contribution depending on the type of the organization.

The programme strategy, in line with the ‘Border Orientation Paper’ proposed by the European Commission, has identified the following thematic fields which should be targeted, these have become the new Programme’s Priorities:
